How to Use 是……的 in Chinese: Emphasizing When, Where, How, and Who

Learn how 是……的 lets you ask about or highlight when, where, how, or who for something that already happened — with short examples, questions, negatives, common mistakes, and practice.

We already know it happened — now we focus on the details

Look at these two sentences:

wǒ zuótiān lái le.

我昨天来了。

I came yesterday.

wǒ shì zuótiān lái de.

我是昨天来的。

It was yesterday that I came.

Both talk about something that already happened. But the second sentence puts a spotlight on 昨天 — yesterday.

Remember: 是……的 helps us highlight a specific detail of an event we already know happened — when, where, how, or who.

It is not simply “past tense.” It is a way to focus.

1. The Basic Pattern

Subject + 是 + Detail + Verb + 的

wǒ shì zuótiān lái de.

我是昨天来的。

I came yesterday.

PartJobExample
我who we are talking aboutI
是opens the spotlight是
昨天the important detailyesterday
来the actioncame
的closes the spotlight的

The important information sits between 是 and 的. That’s it!

2. Emphasizing WHEN

wǒ shì zuótiān lái de.

我是昨天来的。

I came yesterday.

tā shì qùnián lái Zhōngguó de.

他是去年来中国的。

He came to China last year.

wǒmen shì shàng ge xīngqī rènshi de.

我们是上个星期认识的。

We met last week.

wǒ shì zǎoshang dào de.

我是早上到的。

I arrived in the morning.

Everyone already knows the event happened. The speaker is highlighting when.

3. Emphasizing WHERE

wǒ shì zài Běijīng xué Zhōngwén de.

我是在北京学中文的。

I studied Chinese in Beijing.

wǒmen shì zài xuéxiào rènshi de.

我们是在学校认识的。

We met at school.

zhège shì zài Zhōngguó mǎi de.

这个是在中国买的。

This was bought in China.

The focus is on the place.

4. Emphasizing HOW

wǒ shì zuò dìtiě lái de.

I came by subway.

tā shì kāichē lái de.

他是开车来的。

He came by car.

wǒmen shì zuò fēijī qù de.

我们是坐飞机去的。

We went by plane.

wǒ shì yòng shǒujī fùkuǎn de.

我是用手机付款的。

这个菜是我妈妈做的。

zhè zhāng zhàopiàn shì wǒ péngyou pāi de.

这张照片是我朋友拍的。

zhè běn shū shì tā mǎi de.

这本书是他买的。

He bought this book.

zhège dàngāo shì Claire zuò de.

这个蛋糕是 Claire 做的。

Claire made this cake.

These sentences answer the question “Who did it?” — not just “Was it made?”

6. Asking Questions With 是……的

是……的 is also one of the most common ways to ask about the details of something that already happened.

When?

nǐ shì shénme shíhou lái de?

你是什么时候来的?

When did you come?

Where?

nǐ shì zài nǎr xué Zhōngwén de?

你是在哪儿学中文的?

Where did you learn Chinese?

How?

nǐ shì zěnme lái de?

你是怎么来的?

How did you get here?

Who?

zhège shì shéi zuò de?

这个是谁做的?

Who made this?

Remember: The speaker isn’t asking whether it happened. They already know. They want one detail: When? Where? How? Who?

7. A Natural Mini-Conversation

A: nǐ shì shénme shíhou lái Běijīng de?

A: 你是什么时候来北京的?

A: When did you come to Beijing?

B: wǒ shì shàng ge xīngqī lái de.

B: 我是上个星期来的。

B: I came last week.

A: nǐ shì zěnme lái de?

A: 你是怎么来的?

A: How did you get here?

B: wǒ shì zuò fēijī lái de.

B: 我是坐飞机来的。

B: I came by plane.

8. 是 Can Sometimes Be Dropped

In everyday affirmative speech, 是 is sometimes left out when the meaning is clear.

wǒ shì zuótiān lái de.

我是昨天来的。

wǒ zuótiān lái de.

我昨天来的。

Both are natural. As a beginner, learn the full 是……的 first — it makes the pattern easier to recognize.

9. Negative Form: 不是……的

不是 + Detail + Verb + 的

wǒ bú shì zuótiān lái de.

我不是昨天来的。

It wasn’t yesterday that I came.

wǒ bú shì kāichē lái de.

我不是开车来的。

I didn’t come by car.

zhège bú shì wǒ mǎi de.

这个不是我买的。

I didn’t buy this.

zhè zhāng zhàopiàn bú shì tā pāi de.

这张照片不是他拍的。

He didn’t take this photo.

Remember: With 是……的, the negative is 不是……的 — not 没.

10. Regular Sentence vs. 是……的

Simply telling what happened

wǒ zuótiān qù le Běijīng.

我昨天去了北京。

I went to Beijing yesterday.

Highlighting when

wǒ shì zuótiān qù Běijīng de.

我是昨天去北京的。

It was yesterday that I went to Beijing.

The first sentence tells us what happened. The second assumes we know about the trip and highlights when.

Another pair

wǒ zuò dìtiě lái le.

我坐地铁来了。

I came by subway.

wǒ shì zuò dìtiě lái de.

我是坐地铁来的。

I came by subway. (focus on how)

11. When NOT to Use 是……的

是……的 is usually not the first choice when:

  • the action hasn’t happened yet
  • you are describing a regular habit
  • something is happening right now
  • there is no particular detail to emphasize
  • you are announcing brand-new news

wǒ měitiān zuò dìtiě shàngbān.

我每天坐地铁上班。

I take the subway to work every day.

This is a habit — no need for 是……的.

wǒ xiànzài chīfàn.

我现在吃饭。

I’m eating now.

This is happening now, so it isn’t a typical 是……的 situation.

12. Common Beginner Mistakes

Common Mistake 1: Thinking 是……的 means past tense. Its job is to ask about or emphasize a detail — who, when, where, or how — of something already known to have happened.

Common Mistake 2: Using it for every past event. Often a normal sentence with 了 or a time word is better.

Common Mistake 3: Forgetting 的. Learn the whole frame: 是 + detail + verb + 的.

Common Mistake 4: Putting the detail in the wrong place. In 我是昨天来的, the detail 昨天 sits right after 是.

13. See the Difference

14. Try It Yourself

Say each sentence in Chinese with 是……的, then check the answer.

wǒ shì zuótiān lái de.

我是昨天来的。

2. I came by subway.

wǒ shì zuò dìtiě lái de.

4. My friend took this photo.

zhè zhāng zhàopiàn shì wǒ péngyou pāi de.

15. Make It Personal

Answer these questions about yourself — out loud if you can!

nǐ shì shénme shíhou kāishǐ xué Zhōngwén de?

你是什么时候开始学中文的?

When did you start learning Chinese?

nǐ shì zài nǎr xué Zhōngwén de?

你是在哪儿学中文的?

Where did you learn Chinese?

nǐ shì zěnme xué Zhōngwén de?

你是怎么学中文的?

How did you learn Chinese?

16. Final Summary

是……的 is used to ask about or emphasize specific details of a past action or event that is already known to have happened, such as who, when, where, or how.

In simple words: We already know it happened. Now we are focusing on the details.

  • WHEN? 我是昨天来的。
  • WHERE? 我是在北京学的。
  • HOW? 我是坐地铁来的。
  • WHO? 这个是我妈妈做的。

You don’t need to use 是……的 perfectly after one lesson. Start by noticing it in questions like 你是怎么来的? and 你是什么时候来的? Once you hear it in real conversations, it becomes much easier to use naturally.
